Much the biggest issue is THE RELATIONSHIP.

This by far is the best 2 cents!!!

My uncle and aunt lived in Venezuela with their 7 children for 9
years and also summer homes in New Orleans and Cape Cod, Mass.
Unfortunately his wife and 6 of the 7 children didn't like to sail so
they would fly via airplane while he and his daughter sailed. She
never got over her fear yet would go one short day in the bay trips…
She knew little of the mechanics of the vessel (47'er) and this was
her biggest fear. If some thing happened to my uncle she wouldn't
know what to do and didn't want that responsibility. If she learned a
bit about the vessel she might have learned to trust the boat and
    herself!

Making it a joint adventure from the start is defiantly a must both
should at least like the boat if not move on to loving it, some day.
I love crawling through boat yards checking out the different
equipment hulls… but not every one likes to do this but both knowing
what they do AND don't like in a boat is very helpful. I have a
Hunter cheribini 30/76 and although it wasn't my first "love" it was
very affordable and needed refitting which helps one learn their boat
(some times the hard way), Don't laugh but I fell for a Bombay
clipper 31 sloop. It needed much upgrading and at the asking price,
wouldn't be within sensible reach. This Hunter is an honest boat and
will bring me to a higher level of sailing for that move up (some
    day).

    2 more cents, Good Luck
    Bess
