Hi,
I am 61 years old and am looking to fulfill a cruising dream
before it gets tooo late, 35 years ago I spent 3 years in the eastern
Mediteranean working on charter and privately owned yachts before
returning to NZ to raise a family. Originally I started to build a
Bruce Roberts Off shore 44 but children, houses etc stopped me
completing it. I have continued sailing doing some coastal cruising
once a year or so on friends yachts. I have good mechanical and metal
working knowledge and can cope with wood if I have to. My needs are now
less but the dream is still alive. The idea is to find a boat capable
of fast passages in the 30 to 40 foot range with shoal draft to allow
easier entrance to atolls ( either centre board (s) or well designed
twin keels) and to use the european river system and the US.
intercoastal waterway. It would be able to be single handed if
necessary but basically set up for 2 + ocasional 2 extras. I am
intrigued by a free standing rig, Cat type as per the Wylie cat series
but would run with a good cutter set up as tried and true. I lean
towards either alluminium or steel hull, chines are not a problem. 20
years ago there were many French designed and built alluminium yachts
passing through NZ, now you hardly ever see one where have they all
gone?
Any and all advice welcome.
Steve.
