I've had books in bookshelves for the past four years cruising in the Caribbean .. and they've done very well.
My suggestion is to beware of putting them in out of the way storage areas in the hull which you assume will never have a water problem .. since that's exactly the area where the shower sump pump for the forward berth will fail .. and there might be two feet of water sloshing around on an otherwise nice Sunday afternoon .. and all of your wonderful preparations for the safety of your books, well, needs to be pumped overboard.
