Hi Philip,
so glad to know you are aware of the buntline hitch. IMHO, this is one of the most secure and reliable knots (hitches) available. Very easy and fast do tie, too. It has an unearned reputation of jamming easily, but it won't if done correctly, and with the right materials. One of my all-time favorites.
The coil knot I spoke about is quite different, though. If you must compare it to some other knot, you might say it's like a slipped half hitch, or a marlinspike hitch around the coil.
