Here is a simple type of coil that I stumbled upon while playing around with rope. I have never seen it in any book, nor used at sea. Hope some may find it useful.

I believe a good coil knot should
    - provide a loop for the coil to be hung on a hook
    - not come undone when pulled from underneath a lot of heavy stuff in a locker
    - be easy and quick to tie and untie, even under difficult weather conditions.

IMHO, the methods for storing rope in coils that we learn/teach in sailing schools leave something to be desired in one or more of these points. Most are way too cumbersome. The following extremely simple knot satisfies all of the above conditions. Here is how to do it:

    - Hold coil in left hand as usual, making equal-sized bights of rope.
    - Double-up the last 1-2 ft. of the loose end.
    - In that doubled-up bight, make an overhand eye (a crossing turn with the working end on top).
    - Tuck the bight (the loose end of that eye) half-way around the coil and back into the eye.
    - Pull tight.

This knot is so simple that when you first show it to your sailing buddies it almost looks like sleight of hand. Once they have become acquainted with it, most of them will never go back to any other method.

I've made 2 pictures of the knot which hopefully will clarify the modus operandi; Rick has kindly agreed to store them in the photo section of the group.
