    Rick,

A few weeks ago I posted a note here asking if anyone out cruising was using
SkyMate satellite e-mail (www.skymate.com). No one answered affirmatively
but I took the plunge and bought a system anyway so my wife can continue her
job part time while we cruise. I have nearly completed installing it but
don't intend to activate the monthly service until nearer our intended
departure date in June. The hardest part of the installation was running
the coax cable from the antenna on the stern rail through a new hull
penetration along a wireways to the nav station.

If you can postpone your web surfing until you reach an internet cafe as
Dwight mentioned, you can still get e-mail underway with this cost-effective
method. The system costs less than $1000 while an SSB transmitter, antenna,
etc. will run several times that much. The down side is the monthly service
charge but the break even point between that and the higher cost SSB system
is 8-10 years. By then I'll probably have had my fill of cruising and be
ready to move ashore to a retirement home with wireless internet, or
whatever we will be using then.
