I've heard that WiFi is far more available in areas outside the U.S.
than most would believe. In the Caribbean, for example, I've heard
that many places have it and not the wired connections. I don't know
if this is true or not since I haven't been there; yet. It seems
that, except for packages, email has taken the place of snail mail
and there are HAM ways of sending/receiving and services like
Sailmail(?) that are available plus the satellite phones. Most, if
not all, of these are rather expensive to either get into or maintain.
Now that cruising is getting closer, the time has come to find out
what people are using in terms of every day communication and get
familiar with it. What are you using and why? Do I take my Powerbook
to the local "hot spot" or use another way? Are "hot spots" free or
do you have to join a plan and just hope that your plan is available
to use at the next "hot spot"? How is it in Europe, South America,
and the Pacific as well as the Caribbean? Is there something that is
on the horizon that has not caught on yet that seems like it will be
the next great communications thing?
Thanks.
Rick
