      Hi Chris,

I'm sure someone else on the list will have better insights, but here are my
    quick ones:

From what I can see, you don't need a visa. It's a very confusing system
(isn't all govt stuff?) but as far as I know, as long as you leave Britain
(eg sail to Ireland or France or another quick hop into Europe) within the
allocated 6 months (see below), you should be okay and can probably come
back within a fairly short time. You'd probably find it easiest to come over
here, book in for the 6 month allowance, toddle over to France for a month
or whatever the requirement is, and then come back to Britain (though it
might be as much as 6 months absence required). It's all quite close, here,
so popping over and back is easy. You can even see France from England on a
clear day across the channel! LOL! Aim to be in England during the good
weather - say, April to October, and then head for the South of France for a
better winter, is what I'd do.

Once you're here you'll no doubt meet other cruisers who are doing the same
    thing and can advise you.

Here are the relevant UK govt pages: http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/

When I input your data into the questionnaire, it said you don't need a Visa
as such but on arrival must satisfy the Immigration officer that you qualify
as a visitor. It took me to this site:

    http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov
    uk/ind/en/home/laws___policy/immigration_rules/part_2.html

PART 2, paragraphs 40 - 50 are what you need, I think. It looks like you can
come in for up to 6 months but must prove you don't intend to remain after
that, or to seek work, etc etc.

Try going through that; hope it helps!

    Best wishes
    Jo Holloway
