The bar probably fit under a notch, then the knob was turned to tighten
the lid onto the base. Perfectly safe, that is what my folks have. All
the good new pressure cookers are safe, safer than the ones with weights
on top. Just different manufacturers and "new and imprived" sorts of
things. One problem with clamp lids is not tightening them enough, or
overtightening.
