You people are great! So many ideas and suggestions
for what apears to be such a simple subject yet one
that has bothered us for quite awhile. I thought I'd
try to answer each one but I just don't have the time
to do it there are so many. So let me hit a few of the
general ideas.
First, I hadn't thought of vac-pac'ing food. Don't
know about the power consumption but it is worth
looking into as is canning aboard although glass...
Still worth considering and trying at least once.
Books. Well, we have quite a few actually. For example
the Annie Hill book (think she only has one out). Even
found a few others. However, there are SO MANY books
out there that one could go broke buying books and
never get to go cruising. You know, $20 or $30 a month
for books works out to $240 to $360 a year and with a
budget, that could add up to another piece of
equipment that might be needed, repairs to the
refrigerator or something else, or even a night or 2
in a marina with a great meal at a nice restaurant.
Libraries plus good note taking (or a copy machine)
are good things sometimes and so are friends that have
books and lend them out.
Starting off on a 2,000 passage? No. I've done coastal
cruising before and lived aboard for awhile in the
past so have some ideas about it all. However, we're
conservative people when it comes to safety and taking
chances. First it will be coastal cruising for at
least 1 year to get used to the boat and what she will
do and also we'll need to get used to us aboard the
boat and what we will do. Then there are upgrades that
we hadn't thought about but which we think we need to
be more comfortable. Until that's all worked out to
agreeable satisfaction, it's a no go for long
distance. That is unless whatever land we are near
sinks beneath the surface of the water.
I could go on and on. There are nuggets of wisdom in
each and every post that deserve to be commented on.
Even the tongue in cheek ones. Unfortunately I must
get back to work.
Thank you all for all your comments. Sometimes, it
takes someone else saying things before what you are
saying becomes believable or understood. If there are
more comments, please continue to post. It not only
answers our questions with differing, sometimes, views
but also lifts our spirits in the face of relatives
who keep saying things like "Now, don't be stupid! Why
on earth would you want to go and do something like
that for?..."
Now we're even more looking forward to selling the
current house, buying another plus the next boat, and
sailing off at least part time. Thank you all so much.
You are inspirations to those of us who either haven't
been out there or it has been a long time and we're
just itching to get back and looking for excuses to
go.
