Hi Guys
I have been pondering the benefits and practicality of a small DC
generator set that doesn¡¦t cost a fortune and is home built..
Specs as follows..
Small diesel driven unit powering 100 amp alternator (Motor vehicle
unit with regulator removed to gain access to field excitation from
an external controller.
Other uses ¡V as an emergency pump unit..
The alternator would need apx 2HP to drive it at max output, a 3-4
HP unit would do.
I came across various diesel portable pumps using the same single
cylinder air cooled diesel as yanmar sell, but at dirt cheap prices..
With an adapter plate the alternator could be driven from the output
shaft directly and the original belt drive of the alternator used to
drive the original pump now offset or a pucka clutched pump (Engine
driven bilge pump converted).. To power the pump you depower the
alternator field and engage the clutch on the pump..
The engine is electric start with a pull cord backup. Mounted
internally in the boat / engine room.. a small impellor pump could
inject water into the exhaust pipe linking it to the outside world ¡V
at the connection between the existing manifold and the new pipe..
nice n quiet.. (relatively ! ļ)
It would also be possible to link the belt drive to a small
watermaker at a later date.. it really just means a 3/8ths aluminium
plate to attach any goodies with a shaft adapter on the alternator
pulley.
Seems like a good plan to me ?.. what do you think ?..
Would involve a bit of tinkering and assembly.. but would provide a
great power and backup system.
Even with new prices on marine alternator and marine pump and
complete engine assembly .. it would come to less that 2000 dollars
US.., cheap to run and easy to service..
