The Catalina 30 is rather light-displacement isn't it? Would you expect to do any serious cruising in it?

Hi all,
Just thought I'd throw out an introduction. There's a good chance I
might know a few on the list.
Wife and I are former liveaboards and coastal cruiser types that
swallowed the hook in 2001 and bought some dirt in Oregon with a
square wooden structure on it. Yep a house, land, the whole 9 yards.
It was kind of cool the first year or so. Got to buy some new tools
and spread out a bit.
Second year I was really missing sailing so I tried the small boat
thing. All sailing is fun but a 15 footer on a lake, albeit a pretty
mountain lake, is always going to be a 15 footer on a lake. I grew up
sailing on small boats so I'm not knocking it.
Now it been 3.5 years. Not having a proper cruising boat has become
an intolerable situation. So it was time to get a boat.
We just had a deal fall through on a Tartan 30. It was just too
neglected and needed too much work and was too far away. Had it been
closer and the owner a bit more negotiable I would have enjoyed the
project.
So I'm in the hunt for something in the 30 foot range. Boat will be
homeported near San Francisco but shopping from Seattle south. We'll
look at a few prospects in Seattle next weekend.
Generally I've always preferred the traditional layouts with 78"+
settees and a centerline table. One of the boats we may look at has a
dinette on one side and the galley stretched on the other. I've never
liked that setup but the boat has a lot of things going for it. It
was refit for cruising and appears to be ready to go back again. All
the expensive prep has already been done and she appears at least in
the photos to be well set up and cared for. It has quarter berths
that would probably work out OK as sea berths. Aside from the trip
down the west coast we probably won't have too many extended
passages. One thing I do worry about is using the galley underway.
Our last boat, Freedom ketch, had the proper cruising galley where
you could wedge yourself in. On this other boat the only thing I can
think of is one of those galley straps.
Anybody want to comment on these issues please fire away.
