Glad it has worked out for you - there is no dispute from this
corner that steps make the decision to go aloft easier. Like
everthing else in boating (and in life?), you have to weigh the
compromises, risks, etc.
I believe you wrote in an earlier post that you had to replace some
aluminium rivets w/stainless steel, and that you have not had any
corrosion problems in 10 years. However, I would point out that you
still have a "system" that requires maintenance, even though it may
be minimal. Other climbing "systems" are available that may be less
intrusive w/regard to the mast. These "systems" will require
maintenance as well, but it may be easier to accomplish.
