In our case, Bob decided on mast steps immediately after I tried to
haul him up in the bosn's chair and (as a neophyte sailor with no
experience) to change the jib sheets on our new-to-us boat, and got
the line crossed on the winch so he was stuck up there 10 feet above
the deck until an experienced sailor happened along the dock and saw
our predicament and got him down.

Not a concern for us

No maintenance

Have not found this a problem

Bob has gone up a number of times since that first time - to fix the
windex, install a whisker pole, etc. He CAN now. He uses a climbers
harness and ascenders in addition to the steps.
