Len,
Wait!
B4 going anywhere near your mast w/a drill, ask yourself why you
need the mast steps and could you accomplish the same end goal
another way? (bosun's chair, steps designed to run in the main luff
track on a halyard, etc.)
To my way of thinking permanent mast steps are:
Noisy
Add'l weight aloft
A pain to install (as you already know)
Another "system" on board (more maintenance over time)
Add'l points for halyards (internal & external) and sails to get
hung up on
How often do you find yourself up there to begin with and why?
Am I missing something (wouldn't be the first time and won't be the
last :D )?
