I think I would use a wood dowel say 1/2" dia. with a rounded nose
(so you don't scar the mast) drill through the dowel with the
apropriate bit. Then I would slip the dowel over the bit leaving
only 1/8" exposed. Drill your first hole, it almost surely won't be
deep enough, extend the bit another 1/16" and try the next hole. Do
this until you find the right depth to just break through, then
redrill the first holes. Do this slow and deliberate and I should
think your risk of damaging any wiring would be low... Just a
