I helped three boats through the canal and some people returned to help me through. Each time I took the express buss back to Colon at night. The cabbies wanted too much
I had great help from a Cabbie who took us on trips around Panama from Colon. There are only a few allowed into the Panama Canal YC compound.
I used Carlos Solano Taxi 3T-518 Tel 445 1240 or 445- 1608
He was very helpful in getting the paper work done to pass though the canal. Better than an agent.

Subject: [world-cruising] Re: Getting to Panama
Hello
Its been some time sense Ive been to Pamana but the last I knew there
were 4 flights a day out of Miami as well so that might be an
option, as for getting around once youre in country, I would not
recomend the busses for the mere fact that you might not get to where
you think you are going and if you get on a local rather than express
it will take hours to go the 40 miles from Panama to Colon. Cabs are
cheep and a great many of the drivers speak english so I think that
would be the way to go. There is the train too but you will still
have to cab it on both ends so why not just stay in the cab. dont be
afraid to ask a half dozen cabbies what they will charge, dickering
over a price is the way its done weather it be a mango at the fruit
stand or a cab ride. there are no meters so set the price up front.
It sounds like people have the impression that there is a street gang
on every corner or something. Ive never found that to be the case,
Just as any other place a little common sense goes a long way but I
would not feel as though you could not look around a bit. There are
a great many sights to see in Panama and Colon and would be a shame
to let the chance slip away.
Good Luck..........youre gonna love it..!!
