You can fly to Panama City from LAX via Continental Airlines for $400. You can stay in hotels in P City the bus it to Colon
Regular busses cost a couple of $ then meet your friends at the Panama Canal Yacht Club.

I would not stop in Colon.

Hi, does anyone have experience in getting to the east side of the
Panama Canal from Toronto, Canada. What airline, time of the week to
leave, where the flight arrives, transportation to the canal,
accomodation at/near the canal, contacts etc would be helpful. I am
to meet a couple to help them through but just in case of a delay I'd
like to know my options. This will be for near the end of Feb - Mar
time frame. I understand that area is not a place to wander around in.
      Thanks, Wanita
