Mike,
I agree with you wholeheartedly (see Mike's letter,
below)!!! We too, are going on a budget, meaning my
Social Security. My lovely bride is too young to
collect hers so we go on mine alone (and hope to live
long enough to start collecting hers!). Sure, we have
some savings (401K, whatever), but we will try to not
use that as it's for backup and emergency only.
The best advice I can give anyone along with what Mike
said is to learn more about doing all of your own
maintenance, sail repairs, bottom finishing,
installations, etc. I find we can install and repair
anything for which we can find manuals.
My wife and I cut our own hair, repair our own sails
(bought an old Pfaff machine on eBay), do all our own
installations, re-wiring, plumbing, bottom finsihing,
varnishing, you name it. We can always cut hair, work
on other people's boats, make things to sell, buy and
sell things on eBay, or whatever necessary to earn a
living.
I feel I could buy things wholesale from anywhere in
the world and retail them on-line, or sell them in
other ways to make enough to subsist. I bought enough
items on eBay to know that a living can be made there
without working too hard (anyone want to buy a brand
new 4-foot wooden-handled gaff hook for $12.00?). Get
real people! If we're of hardy enough stock to wander
as we liveaboard, we don't need to worry about the
small stuff, and as the book says, "It's all small
stuff!"
Did anyone notice that the USD just made a small
comeback against the CDN?? We're going anyway! Keep
sailing!!!

Mike's response to Lynn:>>>>>>>
MY GOD........How do you get up in the morning?
I dont want this to sound like some kind of attack but
i think if I
plan every buck I might or might not have for the next
25 years I
just might never sell up and shove off. Hell, I might
never leave the
house again.
The cruising lifestyle is about taking a risk or two
and building
some memories along the way and those memories dont
have to cost alot
of cash. If you have any sure income at all you are
well ahead of
most of the cruising folks that Ive been in contact
with. Most have a
little income from a rental property or two, maybe a
401K if they are
lucky.
buy a boat, sell the house, junk the car, kiss the
kids and SAIL. If
its so damn bad, wind is free, just sail on back home,
resume your
life and keep worrying about all the stuff you have no
control over
anyway.
As for me, one more Kid to graduate and Im outta here
no matter what
the dollar is doing in its 20 year cycle, because
thats just what it
is, a cycle and nothing more.
