hey Marc,
I couldn't contain my curiosity ;)
Interestingly I've been looking at the Gulfstar's as my next trade up. About all I've really heard is that they were built for the charter market in the 70's and 80's. I just bought a Columbia 36 so the 50 footer won't be for at least 5-10 years.
Question. What made you decide on the 52 footer instead of the much more common and possibly much cheaper 50 footer?

Hiya Dwight,
Okay, you pried it out of me. We're looking at the Gulfstar Independence in Md. It is listed on Yachtworld. There is one there and there is one listed down here. The one down here isn't really for sale as much as it is being used as a piece of bait. I've been aboard the Inde, down here, and was impressed. After seeing the video, we believe the vessel up in Md is in better condition.
I had looked at a Morgan O/I and some other vessels. Sharon has been looking around and checking different message boards as well. As I've said before, we keep going back to this Inde. So, if anyone has some pro/con comments, let them fly.
To give y'all a bit of back ground, on myself, I was born and raised around New Orleans. I did a bit a trawling, with friends, and did some sailing, in Lake Ponchartrain, I didn't go off shore until I graduated from high school. I took Nautical Science in high school and that is where I met Sharon. Near the fall of 1980 I went to work as a deck hand on 110' utility and 185' supply boats. I worked out of different ports in Louisiana and Texas. During that period of time the oil industry was really booming, in the gulf, and there were many companies prying for a piece of the business. The company I worked for was a split off from another company and the new owners were trying to get too big too fast. Some corners were being cut and in doing so some very dangerous situations were created. Needless to say, after having a few near misses, with the Reaper, I decided to spare myself and leave that job. I ended up joining the Army, in the latter part of '82, and did 4 years on ac
tive
duty as a scout. I joined the National Guard, of Ga, and worked full time in Law Enforcement for 8 years until I decided it was time to go home. Once I got home I continued in the National Guard but had made a change to the Air Force side as an Enlisted Terminal Attack Controller.(Tell pilots where to drop bombs) I also worked again as a police officer here. I've been on some boats but they have been power boats. It has been a little while since I've been on the deck of a sailing vessel. My time in the military is over as I've been in, active and guard time, for over 22 years. I was injured in a training exercise and am awaiting to have surgery on my lower back. Although my injury keeps me from doing long hikes, or any real physical labor, I do not feel it will inhibit my operating a few whinches. Besides, the kids are supposed to be the whinch monkeys, right? Seriously, I still have a considerable amount of upper body, and arm strength, left. Besides this, my specialty is m
y
ability to do some really good navigating. I learned the old school way before GPS's hit the world. I also have a good knowledge of radios and the propagation of diffferent signal types.
Well, I'm going to leave you with this portion, for now. I've been ranting and I need to go to work...hehe...Take care and we'll be in touch.

Hi there,
Just want to let y'all know how much I appreciate all the inputs,
ideas, and opinions concerning my post. All sounds very good. We're
getting ready to go and look at the boat first hand as we got the broker to
make a video and send that to us. It really made the decision on
getting a flight, on a week end, and going to view the boat. I suggest that
idea to anyone who is looking at a boat that may be some distance away.
Ask if they will send a video.
I agree with assessing older electronics. If they're still in good
working order then that is good to go. When they break I guess it gets
beneficial to replace them with the new, usually smaller, units. I've
had the pleasure of using the older style LORAN systems, and radars, and
know how much space and weight can be saved with replacements. Even
radios have taken a good reduction in size/weight. Although I feel that
some of the older tube type HF radios perform better.
All in all, we've been watching this boat for about 6 months.
We've done a bit of comparison between different types, makes, and what we
want to do. I've looked at different boats and loved the lines,
capacities, and such, and I think we'll end up making our offer and see where
it goes. I've learned that everything is subject to change without any
prior notification and things don't always go the way one would want.
So, if it doesn't happen then we will press on. Now, if it
does.....Well, I'll be screaming like a little girl and be as happy as a new daddy.
Of course, Sharon says I'll be spending a lot of time down at the slip
stroking the new addition.
I've got a friend down here that we're going to rent his boat for
a little while. Between doing that, and hopefully sailing our own boat,
we're going to sail for a year before making any big blue water plans.
Foul weather days will be embraced as well as those beautiful days.
This is going to be a big step up in size of vessel so learning the
characteristics of a larger keel boat is the goal. My friend is a Master
Captain and we'll enlist him in our endeavors.
So, we've got a plan. We talk often on the postings on this site
and how everyone is totally supportive of everyone else. Whether someone
is a beginner, or a seasoned sailor, one couldn't ask for more.
Hopefully one day will come where we can meet some of y'all and share the wind
of a day. TNX again.
