James B has obviously bought and sold a few boats based on the quality of his suggestions!!

Another thing I'd add in addition to his remarks about watching the boat for a few months to see if it gets sold - the boat owner is sitting there with your offer in hand while slip fees/yard storage fee's keep coming due and require payment - and even my 27' in a inexpensive marina was costing me over $1400/year for a slip!!

Time is truely on your side! And this time of year is notoriously slow for boat sales! People are thinking about Christmas and snow - not sailing.
    ;-) Good luck -
    Sincerely,
    Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 27' Catalina (sold)

MAC, it doesn't cost you anything to make an offer. If you like the boat,
make a low one. Its always best to be polite, tell them you love the boat
and that $xxx is all you have. Let them make a counter offer. If you are
polite and sincere and can't do business, tell them to keep your name and
phone number on file. Having a boat for sale for a year may make them
      reconsider.

Owners universally over-estimate the value of their boats. The boat will
sell for what the hull and machinery are worth. Owner mods count for only a
little. New engine, new through hulls, new bilge pumps, a big suite of
brand new electronics, new sails, new rigging, new ground tackle, new head,
now those are mods that are worth paying a little extra for. New curtains,
new stove, new table, new cushions, new estehtics, these should be higly
      discounted.

Keep an eye on the boat. If 6 months to a year passes and its still not
sold, call the owner back. Renew your offer, or make a new (lower) one.

Always remember, its far easier to buy a boat then to sell one.
