    Excellent advice below, IMHO. Also suggest you consider buying a first,
    smaller, and not especially bizarre or quirky boat (after having read
    widely on hull design, rig types, boat models and the tradeoffs involved,
    etc.), then doing some coastal or shorter-range cruising and living aboard
    for a few months or a year or so. You'll develop some very clear ideas and
    tight specifications about what your "real" boat must and must not have by
    way of construction, design, sailing characteristics, equipment, layout,
    etc. Then make the big jump ... True, you then have to sell the first boat,
    but you've given yourself a huge leg up on finding the right long-term and
    long-distance boat for you (and had a lot of fun and learning in the process).
