    Chris,

Last year was weird. Bill was holed up in Bermuda for a week with high winds before I arrived. It then settled down and we actually motorsailed the first two days out as the winds were 5 knots.

We used Herb on the SSB who was invaluable. There were gales coming off Newfoundland so instead of heading north to 37N? we and others kept down at 33N? (I forget the actual lats) heading east. We had pleasant steady winds from 15 to 25 knots and we averaged 100 Nm per day. On the last two days we headed northeast and got some winds around 40 knots as we neared the Azores. The winds then dropped to about 5 knots as we entered Horta harbour.

We have heard that the Azores can have periods of no winds. Stories of boats bobbing around for weeks were heard. We had a motorsailor with 800 Nm range but then we were heavy and needed at least 10 knots to move. Regular sailboats with motors made better distances on the windy days but one day we made great mileage as we motorsailed while they just sat there.

So, it's a crap shoot. Bring a paddle!

Dwight, re: Atlantic: We plan to cross in June 2007. Question about your
trip: How was the wind Bermuda - Azores? We have no engine and I have
been planning on crossing on the northern great circle. basically 40N/60W
and then Grt Circle to Ireland. This appears to offer the better breezes.
But I wouldn't mind seeing the Azores, but understand them to be
    windless. What did you experience?

    thanks!

    Chris McKesson
