Hey its winter (at least here in San Diego) and whats a better way to spend
a winter evening then planning future cruises?

My wife and I are already expereinced cruisers, we have accomplished a year
long voyage San Diego to the Bahamas. After the kids get out of college, we
are contemplating retirement and another, much grander cruise.

Here's the basic idea for a 5 year voyage. We'll be in our mid-50s. I'll
be retired from the County of San Diego with medical insurance and fixed
    income.

Sell everything, keeping enough $ to buy a condo for cash when we return.
    Drive to Florida
    Buy boat for cash
    repair and outfit
    trial cruise throughout the Bahamas
return to Florida, fix broken things, upgrade boat as necessary.
take off for Caribbean "Thornless Passage"
        Bahamas
       Turks and Caicos
        Haiti / DR
        Puerto Rico
        Leeward / Windward isles
    Atlantic crossing
spend 1 year cruising Great Britian (England, Scotland, Ireland)
    Canals Baltic to Med
spend 1 year cruising Med (France, Italy, Spain, Greece)
Intend to make a base somewhere and rent or buy a car to explore Europe.
Intend to fly home to US once in a while.
Intend to have our children on board as guests once in a while.
    Sail back to US
Sell boat, buy condo on golf course.

I know how to get from Florida to Grenada. What time of year do you cross
the Atlantic east about? How would you plan the European legs of the trip?

I'm thinking boat about 38 feet, cutter with self tacking staysail,
pilothouse or full enclosure, aft cabin with full size bed - I will not
spend another year sleeping in a V Berth. Diesel heat. Modified fin keel
(fast sailer with good upwind capabilities). Wind vane. Simple, simple.
