Mike D - Best of luck to you and Patricia in your future on Halcyon. You are
wise to plan now for a 2009 departure. I and my future wife Rana, sailed our
28 foot 1960's vintage boat until 5 years ago when we got our 41 ft. ketch
Raven. Since that time we have been refitting her for our long term voyage
starting next spring. As to the electrical components issue, we had nothing but VHF
on the old Windsong, but have installed an electric windlass, radar,
refrigeration and plotter on Raven. We will decide between SSB or Sat Phone before
departure. I agree that it is safer to keep your electronics separate, because of
the danger of lightning strikes or other linked failures. However, we added the
radar to the plotter for convenience, and because we will be coming through
Nova Scotia and Maine and understand that radar is a good safety addition.
