When you install solar panels be aware of the up to
30% higher efficiency you can achieve with a
MPPT-charger.
It's electronics makes proper use of the 17 volts the
panels provide and does not simply cut away the
"superfluous" 2,5 volts.
Actually, if you connect the panels directly to your batteries or through a
regulator and they are charging, the batteries never see 17 volts, as the
panels cannot make that voltage while pushing any current ...that 17V is a
value for an "unloaded" panel, the battries will see whatever voltage is
produced across them at the current charging rate they are undergoing. The
advantage of such a device you mention is more to keep the panels charging
when the voltage they produce would be to low to do that otherwis.-Ken
