I do know and have spoken with a man who was caught in the "Queen's Birthday
Storm" north of New Zealand in June, 1994. He and two crew were sailing a
Valiant 40. To hear him tell it, the boat pretty much took care of itself,
running downwind under minimum sail with wind vane steering.

    One data point.
