I think regen works, sort of. That is, you sure can get power from a water
prop while underway...BUT-it is not so a good deals it may seem, as it slows
the boat down a lot. Look at it this way...if turning the prop with 2KW give
a speed of 4 kt, then if there is enough wind blowing to push the boat at 5
kt and you want 500 watts regen, will that slow you down to 4kt? Probably
so. And yet I can get nearly that much power from a small wind generator,
which is far simpler, easier to maintain, and cheaper to install, with a lot
less boat speed penatly.
Although there are occasions where regen might be practical...I would rather
put the money in solar or wind. More cost effective. If there is enough wind
to spin the prop underwater the wind genny will hum...with my boats top
speed of a bit over 7 kts, it will charge well even dead downwind most of
the time in the ocean.
Most vehicules that employ regen don't convert all that much % when stopping
as they can't get it into the battries fast enough. New experimental designs
use super capacitors and can capture much more even most of the kinetic
energy when stopping. But a boat doesn't need that of course.
Boats can be had cheap right now all along the Ivan range. Some work may be
needed...;-)
Most are not bluewater cruisers though, but I did see a Formosa ketch in
somebodys back yard on its side. So, they are there. The idea of working in
boatyards is sound. That waqy, you could make contacts, and learn about
boats at the same time.
