Hello Group.
Well, we just had a great sail from Brittany (France) via Ushant
Island, the Isles of Scilly (UK) and then Falmouth.. terrific
cruise.. headwinds all the darn way <g> but still fun. We had a Gib
Sea 402 for the duration, a nice boat, but not an offshore
liveaboard.
Anyways, I took the oportunity to read the superb CCA 'Desirable and
Undesirable characteristics of offshore yachts' by the cca.. well.
all I can say is - bloody amazing book.. a fantastic source of info
on selecting a suitable offshore boat for ocean cruising.
If you aint got it, buy it, borrow it, but most of all read it. !!!
most of the mundane questions asked in the normal course of things
are answered in super detail.
One thing I liked is the following basic formula...
offshore capsize resistance... take the weight divided by 64 to
achieve the displacement, divide the cube root into the beam, look
for a figure less than 2.. if that test is passed, deduct the length
from 160 and that should least equal the angle of vanishing positive
stability.. its only a start, but its a good one.. length LWL is not
always equal to theoretical capsize length, but providing the
screening formula is met, then its a great start.. :-)
super book, from respected sources.. I really recommend it to all.
