    Great question Dave,
My boat is about 15,000 lbs and currently equipped with a 50 hp
diesel. (Yanmar) We did quite a bit of cruising in her though with
only a 9.5 hp Yamaha outboard. Cruising speed with the outboard:
about 6 knots. Cruising speed with the diesel: about 6 knots.
Of course with the diesel the boat doesn't slow down if we're
punching into a stiff chop, but with the outboard our speed would
    drop off dramatically.
Everything being equal, more power is better. Trouble is, everything
is never equal. Bigger engine, more fuel, more weight, so you need
    more power ...
My suggestion is do not rule out a boat if you like everything about
her but the engine. All boats are compromises in one way or another,
and people cruise happily with a wide range of power ratios.
