I went back into my notes and found these two entries about engine power for
    sailboats.

The first one comes from the engine company Westerbeke and was used to give
a rough estimate of engine size to start with.

A sailboat for average use needs two horsepower per one thousand pounds of
displacement and a long range/world cruising sailboat needs two and one half
horsepower per one thousand pounds of displacement.

The other rule of thumb comes from the work someone did to design a program
to size propellers in sailboats. I think L. Zeitlin did it, and it was based
    on “Keith’s formula”

    Required horse power to reach hull speed = D * ((HS/(11.963 * L^.5))^3)

And this works out to 2-horse power per thousand pounds of displacement.
Because they both agree this might be a good starting point.
    All the best,
    Robert Gainer
