Actually, I did remember that he was 60. I am no spring chicken myself, but
figure you never really know how much time you have, and can't really do
much about it anyhow, just do the best we can with what time we have.
I also like the enginless concept...to an extent. My boat sails very well,
and I always shut the engine off as soon as I am able to sail without
tacking in narrow channels with barges and fluky winds, ect. This means
99.99% of the passaqge is under sail, unless we do 360 for three days 30 NM
from shore with a big storm coming or are doing the ditch. I only carry a
very small amount of fuel, anyhow (the boat was a racer and only needed
enough to get to the line and back). In any case the oil pan is rusted
through, 30 years 1/4 in off the bilge, and I want to put an electice hybrid
drive in, but not enough $ available, so it is sails only for now.
The hybrid drive is a very interesting concept for this size boat, as it
would maximize fuel efficiency while allowing most motoring I do, such as
away from docks ect, to be done without an IC engine, in fact I would have
enough range under electric only (with my three group 27 existing house
battries) to get in most harbours, 8-12 NM at least. As part of the hybrid
systems I also would have a 5KW generator which can be used to supply power
for propulsion, boat maintance...or even AC! (Not me!) And if the IC engine
wouldn't start, I could still dodge fishing boats or container ships!
I have been reading that book from the link I sent in my last msg...it is
quite good. This was the person who wrote Apples first word processing
program. Check it out. He started with a Crealock 31...a boat similiar in
some ways to the Westsail if I remember. He liked that boat a lot.-Ken
