I still think three to six M is not enough thime, but if you were to start with short day trips, then few day off shore, then longer over a period of time, you could make it work...but I would not spend 3 M and then take of on a major passage by myself.
As far as boats, here is another good link;
This is very similiar to my boat, but larger. My boat has safely carried me upwind in 70 kt winds and 30-35 ft seas,,,with panache. I would expect similar performance from this, but there are trade offs. Always one of the biggest is the performance VS comfort factor. Performace can mean comfort if it allows you to escape a storm system, but if not, it it can wear you down. It can mean saftey if it allows you to claw off a lee shore, but it can be the reason you get cracked ribs also! Two sides to every view at least. As for strength and saftey, yes the WestSail has a very good rep,
They are a great boat, but it is not the only boat built that solidly...in fact, most if not all S & S designs are noted for that, as well as many, many others. The downside of such a heavily built design with very traditional lines is that they are slow and not very close winded, both can be serious drawbacks. You WILL get into a storm if you sail long enough, so best learn how by doing, at least to some extent...part of the reason for taking the time to learn how the boat behaves in heavy weather when you are close to facilities where you can fix things that you break.
