Dave, if you haven't already done so, you may want to look at
www.yachtworld.com. Go to the search for buying a boat, enter your criteria
(sail, brand, length, amount to spend, etc.) and see where the ones you are
    interested in are berthed.

I live in Texas and there are not many blue water boats here. Florida is
    loaded.

I think you have lost memory of some of my earlier statements
where "the plan" is to scoot to FL or TX and buy a suitable blue
water cruiser, then spend 3 to 6 months learning to sail it and THEN
bob off to the Bahamas or wherever.

Why do you think I am asking here? I have already learned that the
boats I was looking at were totally unsuitable for what I intend. I
now have a shortlist including westsail, baba, ingrid and southern
cross to mention a few thanks to the group wisdom. I suspect I'll
finish up with a westsail, not because I like it particularly but
because it seems to have the best reputation for strength and safety
with a novice at the helm.

I think if you look back through the posts I am coverng a lot of need-
to-know questions and will be acting upon the collective wisdom of
this group. That DOES include a learning time of 3 to 6 months. I
have no dilusions about being an "expert" at the end of said time,
but I'll know how to safely aim the boat somewhere and actually
arrive. I am not new to boats and the sea, just sailing.

Since I have no deadlines and do not intend to adopt any, storm
sailing will be by surprise only. <g> I'll take the lesson then! :-O
