I would suggest reading Hiscock's books, as this will allow you to
experience several decades of cruising in just a few hours. As you read
his stories, start by learning his way. Then as you gain insight, move
into a phase of trying to anticipate: "Now what would I do in this
situation?" and see how closely your approach comes to his. Eric's
approach isn't necessarily "right" but it did work very well for several
decades of full time cruising.
Oh, and I suggest reading his books in chronological order so that you
learn in parallel with his learning. He too started out as a Newbie.
Also read Adlard Coles' "Heavy Weather Sailing". This is an excellent
primer on what the sea can be really like, including weather forecasting,
ship handling, etc. Yes, it's really like that.
I also very much like a book - sorry author not coming to mind at present
- entitled "Compleat Yachtmaster."
