Where did you charter this boat? Do you remember her name?
FWIW, the Valiant 40 is one of the most balanced boats I've ever
experienced. Very little helm pressure. My rule of thumb is that if I need
two hands on the wheel, it's time to reef. Most of the time, even in
gale-force winds, one hand is enough.
Mark Schrader solo-circumnavigated Resourceful, a Valiant 40 with a tiller,
in the late 80's. He was the first American to singlehand around the world
via the Great Five Capes. A subsequent owner replaced the tiller with a
wheel...but he kept the name! She's now on her third owner...still with the
same name. :)
