If we meet and you're introduced to me as Eric, would it be OK for me to
start calling you Eddie or Jack, just 'cause I like those names better?

I own a 70-year-old wooden boat named "Irene Agnes", and as much as I hate
her name, I love the boat dearly and there is no way in hell I would ever
presume to call her anything else -- except perhaps a nickname of
    endearment, like "Aggie".

For the most part, only if you have a kid (or build a boat) are you free to
    call her anything you want.

However, depending on what kind of boat you're shopping for, you'll probably
run into plenty of homogeneous, soul-less hulls that have had their names
changed with every new owner they've had. There's no connection here between
the name and boat. Call it whatever you want; it won't know the difference.

    Carl
