    This absolutely depends on your cruising area, and your cruising
    style.

    We have a big boat (44-50 feet depending on what you count), we (did
    for 3 out of the last 4 years although we will not be going again)
    cruise 6+ months of the year mostly coastal on the ICW, we stay in
    marinas almost every night (except when going offshore like between
    Ft. Pierce and Miami), and we eat out almost every night. We also
    rented a car several times - twice in Charleston where we were for a
    week, twice in Miami (ditto) and about once a month when we were in
    Marathon this past winter. We are retired.

    The second year we went (2001-2002) I got a computer with a
    spreadsheet program and in teaching myself to use it I put all the
    costs of cruising into it. .I estimated that we spent the equivalent
    of $40K a year for that 6 month cruise. We spent about $110/day.

    [That did NOT include
    *Bob's medical expenses from his heart attack (some of which insurance
    eventually paid for),
    *prescription costs,
    *car insurance (about $200/month for 8 cars with no comprehensive
    insurance),
    *the house expenses (which were about $250/month for electricity,
    phone, mortgage (which is now paid off) and heating fuel),
    *ISP fees,
    *the monthly fee of $5.00 for bill paying on line,
    *magazine subscriptions,
    *clothing purchase costs,
    *computer parts costs,
    * Direct TV cost - now about $45/month, but we have that whether we
    are on the boat or at home as we just move the receivers to the boat.
    *the cost of the equipment upgrades we got for the boat during the
    summer,
    *state boat registration fees (one large boat and 3 small ones),
    * cost of hauling the boat pre-trip and post-trip
    * cost of bottom paint
    *the boat loan ($600/month) or the home improvement loan ($400/month
    which has now been paid off).]

    This year we spent more like $135/day as we did not go to the Bahamas,
    and were in marinas more, and marina costs have gone up.

    This counts the following.

    * Marina fees including electricity, water and pumpouts (although we
    rarely get a pumpout that is not free except at our home marina where
    it is $5.00) - not including cable as we now have a satellite dish and
    also an antenna for the TV. Since we do not have A/C, our
    electricity costs when that is billed by the KWH as for a monthly
    rental are minor.
            I think the average marina cost on the ICW is now more than
    $1.25/ft. This year, we continued to pay the yearly rental on our
    home marina slip (quarterly payment of $560), so that is also included
    in the marina fees.

    *Fuel

    *Food (both at restaurants-including tax and tips) and groceries for
    the boat). Note that when we are at home in the summer, we go out to
    eat once or twice a week so this is not a big change.

    *Phones - two cell phones - one cell phone with no roaming for a lot
    of minutes (costs about $70/month) and one old bag phone where we paid
    about $1.00/minute for each call because it was all roaming. We use
    the bag phone when the little cell phone has no signal and to get
    pocketmail. Also we got a land line for 3 months in Florida. That was
    about $20/month.

    *Boat parts (some of these were replacement parts like an alternator
    bracket which Bob had re welded for free but he also bought a
    replacement, and some were just good deals that he found on things
    that we normally carry)

    *boat cleaning and maintenance supplies

    *car rental, and entrance fees for visiting local attractions.

    *gifts and souvenirs, such as Christmas, birthday and anniversary
    gifts for our 4 children and 9 grandchildren and my mom

    * film (although I don't use film so much anymore, I do upload digital
    pictures to the internet and get prints, so it comes out about the
    same - photography is one of my MAJOR expenses)

    *postage. I have mail forwarded to one of our daughters, and I gave
    her money to forward important materials to us.

    * laundry (2 or 3 loads a week)

    We neither drink nor smoke nor gamble.

    We could do it for much less if we were to eat out less and anchor out
    more, or if we spent less time in the high rent districts like West
    End, and Marathon. Very few cruising folks stay in marinas as much as
    we do.
