Robert, you have more lives that a cat!

How do you avoid losing your rig when you've lost the headstay? Did you lay
ahull because you had no other choice (after you lost the storm jib)?

I've never sailed in such conditions. The stories I've read from those who
have cause me to believe that laying ahull is extremely dangerous, as you
are vulnerable to breaking waves and could roll, lose the rig, and sink.
But then, getting pooped while running doesn't seem like such a good idea
    either...!

I wonder if many cruisers will get "caught out" in such storms in the
future, as our ability to locate and forecast these storms, along with our
communication capabilities, is so improved. Is there an excuse anymore for
any competent cruiser to be surprised by a hurricane?
