Way to go lew. you have managed to do something the people who build police
vests are unable to do. You should contact them, tomorrow, and inform them.
They will pay handsomely for your incredible design and fabrication skills.
You can cruise regally for the rest of your life on the royalties.

To anyone else wishing to build a boat that can take a direct, close-range
hit from a "copper-jacketed .357 round" is best advised to consult closely with
    your naval architect.

btw, I have a 70 mile-per-gallon Cadilac in case anyone wants to buy it.

In a message dated 8/15/2004 1:48:16 PM Eastern Daylight Time,
     writes:
    SFWIW:

The laminate structure that stopped a .357 mag is as follows:

    Outer Skin:

4 layers of 34 Oz triaxal knitted glass and epoxy with a 50/50 ratio of
    glass to resin.
2 layers of 24 Oz biaxial knitted glass and epoxy with a 50/50 ratio of
    glass to resin.

    Outer laminate thickness: About 1/4".

    Core:

    1" Airex foam core, 6.3 lbs/cubic ft.

    Inner Skin:

4 layers of 24 Oz biaxial knitted glass and epoxy with a 50/50 ratio of
    glass to resin.

    Inner laminate thickness: About 3/16".

    Total sandwich construction specifications:

    Thickness: Less than 1-1/2".

    Weight: Approximately 3.75 lbs/sq ft.

BTW, the thickness of steel having a weight of 3.75 lbs/sq ft would be
    approximately 0.092".

The sandwich construction approach does not require ribs of other support
structure required by thin metal plate.

The deck and bulkheads are also of sandwich construction.

The only purpose of the .357 mag test was to get a feel of the ability of
the sandwich structure to absorb kinetic energy which it seems to have
    done a pretty good job.
