I learned that term as "Glass-Reinforced Plastic".
As was mentioned earlier, osmosis is a characteristic of polyester resins,
not epoxy resins. In my limited experience, epoxy resins do not blister.
Metal hulls, though, are subject to condensation problems. If
insufficiently insulated, they can develop swamp-like conditions on their
interiors. Those same symptoms are a continuing problem for steel hulls, as
the condensation leads to corrosion. Frequent inspections are necessary.
Unfortunately, I have not yet seen a steel hull boat that allows proper
inspection of all its interior spaces.
I do like aluminum as a hull material. If I were to build from scratch, I'd
certainly look for that alternative. The van de Stadt 47 is one of my
favorite designs.
