I understand that many people enjoy the look and romance of the Colin Archer
style of boat. But I have never enjoyed the Westsail (Spitzgatten) style of
boats. Colin Archer designed a lot of boats that were used as life boats
before the engine was a factor. The boat was designed to survive the worst
and carry a large number of shipwreck survivors. It was not designed to be
fast or have any of the modern amenities. If you want to have a double ender
for esthetic reasons I always thought that the 39-foot Southern Cross
designed by Thomas Gillmer would be the better boat. The hull is a more
modern one and has a better shape; there is also lots of storage on board.
Either boat will survive any thing that you would want to go though, but the
more modern shape will mean that the trip is shorter and more comfortable. I
have a lot of respect for Atkin and his designs. The Ingrid is a great boat
and you can’t go wrong with that one either. How the Chris Craft fits into
this is somewhat of a mystery. Its not anywhere near the same style and I
don’t think anywhere close in ultimate strength. I owned one of the 30’
Chris Craft sailboats and was appalled at how stupid I was to have gotten
that boat. Lots of structural problems in the boat, some of which I
understand were throughout the line of Indian named Chris Crafts.
All the best,
Robert Gainer
