I'm reminded of an incident that occurred several years ago. A friend of
mine, in the market for his "perfect" boat, discovered a design that I'd
never heard of, but which looked ideal. The designer was well-known, Ted
Brewer.
My friend called Mr Brewer to find out what he could about this boat. Mr
Brewer told him that about six were built, and they didn't sail worth a
darn. He said they were an absolute failure, and if my friend should ever
see one, he should steer clear of it.
I don't remember the boat, but the lesson is one that shouldn't be
forgotten. "Good numbers" do not make for a good boat.
That the Apache wasn't built in many numbers may not indicate that there's
something wrong with it, but it certainly doesn't speak in its favor.
