I didn’t even think of modern sails when I read that post. I was thinking of
the traditional English sail made with tanbark cloth. If you use tanbark you
get a red or dark brown sail. The color comes from the preservative the
English used on flax and cotton sails. Is Kevlar and spectra a good choice
for cruising sails now? I have only used them on the racing boats. I always
had the impression that they were somewhat delicate and didn’t stand up to
the rigors of offshore work.
