Joe n Jayne,
After sailcloth is woven it is treated to keep the warp and weft fibers from
moving, and thus distorting the fabric. This finish (most often resin)
prevents you from dyeing the fabric after it’s made. You can stain it with
mildew but not dye it tanbark in color. I read everything I can find on
boats, yacht design, construction and sailing. Even the junk books have been
worth reading. I guess that I just have too much free time when I cruise. I
would like to see a list of recommended books also; I might have missed one
or two that I should read.
All the best,
Robert Gainer
