    Hello Kevin n Clare.

We are Joe n Jayne (UK) - year 5 of our 6 year plan :-)....
Our plan is to retire next year (about summer UK) and travel to the
USA to buy a Westsail 32.. we cannot find a better boat for our
needs. We currently sail a Gib Sea 402, doing a nice trip from Brest
(France) to the Isles of Scilly and then on to Falmouth (Cornwall
UK). in a few weeks, so will be fun. Jayne has spent some time on
the little sister !! :-) (A gib Sea 35).. but this will be the first
time on the 'big boat' for her.....

I was brought up on the Isles of Scilly and' last year, my dad (An
    ex
lifeboatman) was buried at sea near Annett on the islands.. it was
both upsetting and uplifting..... It will be a super
trip back there with lots of memories.

Out goal is also the Pacific... Tahiti has been in my dreams
    constantly, with perhaps Galapogos' via
Panama first of course.. :-).. then on to NZ and Aus. We may end
    up 'doing' the Med
for a year, although I have travelled extensively throughout the Med
and don't really find too much to interest me.. a bit' too'.. err...
well'.. 'same as' the last bay.... ... too many bloody marinas and
people ready to help you part with the hard earned ..... :--)

The Caribbean is also a bit tinged with the same phylosophy for
us... as in .. pay as you go.. and, through the nose at
that !! .... ! ..,,,,,,,,,,, Aint interested in the 'ARC' or
the 'well beaten track'.. just wanna try and see it like it is,
although I do appreciate it will take some 'finding...'

Get yourself a copy of the British Admiralty 'Ocean Passages of the
World' . a veritable bible... also a few pilot charts to plot yer
course and season.. OPotW has 3-400 YEARS of data... all presented
in a relatively easy to read format.. a wealth of previous
seafarers' knowledge in one volume... marvellous. !!!! :-)

I have a library of 0ver 300 books here, and if I was to pick my
favourite reading.. here would be the results... (I would LOVE it if
other contributers could list their preferred reading and why - it
is a minefield out their... but so much GREAT stuff..

    Here goes...

(I thought of listing them in order of preference.. however, one
triggers the other, moods trigger differing titles... I have used
these books to conjure up great moods and moods have conjured up a
thirst for certain authors, hope you understand.. so, an unedited
    list... :-)

Bernard Moitissiere - ALL... fabulous.. a wealth of info... !
Miles Smeeton... great read.. a moral of what NOT to do lol.... :-)
Hal Roth.... can't say anymore.. great stuff. !!!
    Chichester .. sigh... marvellous.. !
Slocum.. need more be said ???... (how to use tin tacks as a burgler
    alarm !)
The Pardey's.. quite frightening when Larry's temper threatens
to 'kill' lyn in the Med, (The STRESS),,,,, but otherwise ,, ok,...
    some good tips. !

Eric n Susan Hiscock, great reading, constrained by his
materialistic outlook ( or more rightly his fight against a
developing world and his desire to shed himslef of such.. he never
quite won...)- (Aren't we all doing that though ?? !),
but, ''great'' reading,,,,, as he got older, he appeared to find it
    more difficu;t to balance these.
Ellen, - hmmm... difficult, mixed up young gal...... nuff said..
Jimmy Cornell and family - all, good work.. got detracted by the
ARC, but otherwise great stuff.. if you wanna cruise the 'golden
mile' of cruise sailing.. then go for it.. cash all the way, but
well trodden, many lifeboats' and' you could even get
insurance... '''''''''''''''life is good... :-) :-)
party all night on another' perhaps, charter yacht with carefree
    owners..
excellent !!!.. or maybe not.. or maybe so :-) :-) - The ARC is the
place to call 'Mayday' etc when you lose your rudder.... and if
that's your style, then go for it, but I think not... :-)

Other good stuff in my limited reality is....

'Sea Fever' (My underlying phylosophy)..(Search Google if necessary)
'Sod's Law of the Sea' .. probably the best '''ever''' book on
    cruising....
Adlard Coles - 'Heavy Weather' .. a MUST
Robertson.. (Sorry - I said thoughts would be random.. :-) ) check
him out for the liferaft..... :-)
Tristan Jones... great yarn.. great stretch of the truth me thinks..
    but as said, great yarn(s)....
Anything by Tom Cunliffe... superb guy, arrogant as the day is long,
    and rightly so !... :-) :-)
Donald.. yes, ol Don Street... .. he can tell it like it is with a
tougue in cheek,, !!! and be gads is there a lot to leanr from him !
    >>

And the prize, for the BEST book on Cruising EVER.. must go to...
    wait for it...

    'Sod's Law of the Sea'

by Bill Lucas and Andrew Spedding..

if you aint read it, and you probably haven't !!.. then
please do, and report back.. it is totally invaluable and has missed
it's literary right of passage as an all time 'cruising' classic...

    :-) :-)

Enjoy your plans Kevin n Clare, have a great life, please read the
    above recommendation... (s)

and have fun, above all else, have fun guys...

    Joe (n Jayne)
