These giant waves must be formed quickly by unusual circumstances that also
dissapate them just as quickly or else we would see them all over. Note
that giant "holes" have been reported as well from time to time by ships.

One possibility is that the snapshot of the "waves" actually shows the
moment when two or more wave trains coincide, producing a monster that
breaks into its original trains a moment or two later.
