\/\/\/\/ Spoken like a true Valiant owner ;-) I well might have become one
myself -- and your counsel was an important part of that picture, Bryan
-- had I been able to find one that I could afford to buy or to bring back
into her green and salad days (to borrow a little bit of Shakespeare). I
just missed a real beauty about a year ago that would have been a stretch
but would have been worth it because of her immaculate condition superb
equipment, and I think she became the benchmark/unattainable standard by
which I measured the other (rather tired and lacking but overpriced)
Valiants that subsequently came on the market.

To your request but briefly, so as not to bore people: I first saw the P40
I eventually bought at the end of a few weeks of cruising last winter
between La Paz and Bahia Banderas with my son on his boat (an older 32'
plywood/epoxy sloop). One thing led to another over the course of several
months, during which time I looked at a lot of other boats; the sale on the
P40 closed last month. The boat's in PV; I'm back in Washington for the
summer. Not the greatest situation, perhaps, but opportunities unfold in
all sorts of strange ways sometimes. I think it's fair to say the boat has
the hull design or shape I liked the best -- modified fin, skeg-hung
rudder, medium displacement -- and was the most waterline I could afford.

I'll be heading back to PV in November, when my son and I will remove the
teak decking, which is shot, and replace it with Treadmaster non-skid. Then
I expect to cruise that area for most of the winter and in the spring sail
the boat back up to the Pacific Northwest for summer cruising up here. An
arduous journey, I know, but that's the tentative plan at the moment. My
son might crew for the trip up and a local friend or two might also join
in, but there could possibly be a crewing opportunity for the right person.

I don't plan to keep the boat in Washington -- I'd head south come
September and return to Mexico once hurricane season has passed. After
that, I really don't know. I'm itching to cruise Scotland and Ireland and
then head to the Med. On the other hand, heading south and west and getting
to Australia/New Zealand sooner rather than later also appeals.

Am off tomorrow morning for a circumnavigation of Vancouver Island on my
Gulf 32, which I'll be selling upon my return in mid-August. Not much
sailing on the inside, probably, but I'm hoping for some steady
northwesterlies on the west side, which would make for some fun sailing.

More in five weeks or so if anyone's interested. Life is good ...

    Cheers,
    Phil
