The drop keel on my Irwins is just a centreboards ie. It has no ballast
. It helps in windward pointing ability but only in light winds. It adds
nothing to stability .
I have a lot of trouble going to windward in mine in more than 40Kt.
especially if there is a large sea. There is not enough horsepower. I have
to reef down to sails which are too small to push through the big seas.
There however are real "drop keel" boats which have ballast in the drop
keel. They are better but you must rely on a good mechanism to lift the keel
back up. Usually they use an hydraulic device. In Australia we have boats
like this
designed by Joe Adams.I have a friend that did the Melbourne to Osaka two
handed race in an Adams
40' with a drop keel. He then successfully completed a cruise around the
north and South Pacific with his wife. > >
I dose any one know of any boats like this with ballasted drop keels
available in USA.

Barry
