I have always considered that this was a very undesirable
configuration. It means one person in the berth has to climb over the
other person to get up. For us, because one or both of us has to get
up to go to the bathroom at night, it was not something that we
wanted. Before we bought the boat, we talked to another couple and
they wanted a double berth that could be exited from both sides - not
    through the foot.

The CSY 44 WT has a pullman berth, and one of the folks we know with
one has modified theirs so that they can sleep fore and aft instead of
athwart and get out through the foot of the berth.

Some WOs have the aft cabin modified into a pullman berth, with an
athwart regular double bed mattress in the aft cabin. This is called
the Peter Rabbit modification and is reasonably easy to do. It also
means you can use regular sheets instead of special boat sheets. We
have modified our boat so that we can use regular single bed sheets,
but we didn't want a whole double bed in the aft cabin because of the
difficulty in accessing the emergency tiller area.

If the boat is rolling a lot and Bob is on watch, I sometimes sleep
athwart in the aft cabin which since it is the equivalent of two
singles side by side I can still do. Bob sleeps in the single in the
main cabin with lee clothes when I am on watch.
